Geography at The Hendreds
Geography provides a way of looking at the world, people, places and the environment, helping us to understand why they are important to us, how they are changing, and how they might develop in the future. Geography is important to pupils at The Hendreds because it helps them understand how people and natural ecosystems around the world are interconnected. We study Geography across various scales of enquiry: individual, local, regional, global; and present, past, future) and recognise that geography is often the driver for learning in other subject areas as it provides a context for learning about the real world in Maths, Science, History and PSHE. At The Hendreds, children have frequent opportunities to explore the local area and the plentiful outdoor space within the school grounds, helping them to develop a sense of awe and wonder for the great outdoors. They develop practical geographical skills encompassing field-work, problem solving, map work and ICT to help them answer questions about the natural and human world. All children have the opportunity to participate in three contrasting residential trips during their time at Hendreds. These concrete outdoor learning experiences help children further develop and consolidate their practical geographical enquiry skills.
